ALWAYS DO BACKUPS!

So late Christmas night, I decided to update the copyrights on my web pages that I’ve created. Usually before I do any MAJOR or minor changes, I like to back everything up.

Except for tonight!

I figured updating the copyright date on all my webpages should happen as easy as a snap.

WRONGO CHUCKY

In the process of Dreamweaver doing its thing, I notice it touched the wordpress part of my web page.

DANG IT!

When I went to go access the wordpress part, all the linkages were broken. DOH! But luckily, the robustness of wordpress allowed me to restart the program from stratch with my changes included and the database was re-connected and I was good to go.  That was a scare I didn’t need to give myself. And another lesson learned. ALWAYS DO BACKUPs.

And just like Voting in a Chicago election, do them early and often!

Oh yea, and just to add insult to injury. I blew up my testing environment too! But I did have a backup for that one.

If there is one thing that great photography and writing have in common,  it’s  that sometimes interesting things happen when you’re not ready for them. So, the trick is to always be ready.

With the version of WordPress I’m using, not only am I able to customize the page down to the pixel that I want to display, but I’m also able to type up drafted ideas on the fly, from anywhere without the need of my laptop. Though I must admit my ideas are a bit rough, but as I come back to my own writings, I can always spruce them up as I go.

I do edit my own blogs to a point, but when I’m ready to have something checked, I notify my editor to give it a run through. Informing her of my need for proofreading is as easy as changing the publishing status of the blog.

That line was made famous by the 1931 Frankenstein movie and I thought it was appropriate for this phase of my project.  So, after a month of hard work, of coding, shooting images, and cracking the books, my new website is up and running.  It  began life as a series of sketches and handwritten notes that developed into the site you see today.

I turned my ideas into reality with training from Lynda.comDreamweaver, and my gathered notes captured on Evernote.com. There are a ton of great web sites out there and all I did was make notes on all the wonderful things that I liked. Then, I went through training on Lynda.com to learn how to create those ideas for myself. This site/blog/coding/images is representation of that work, with a couple great images thrown in.

Another great feature is that this site is 100% iphone, ipad and mobile device friendly. And no, in case you’re curious, there is no flash anywhere to be seen. Granted, not EVERYTHING is in it at this time, but I didn’t want to hold up the rest of the site for a few videos still in the editing process. Stay tuned for an update to this version, once those are rendered to the proper size and coded in.
