Get with the Program

Almost every “point and shoot” and SLR camera has both an AUTO (on my Canon, it’s the green square and the picture icons below it) and a “P” or PROGRAM mode for shooting. Unfortunately,  AUTO mode has settings that change for every lighting scenario and for every shot. Relying on this setting means that consistency in your shooting will be lost.  “P” or Program mode will allow you to have a little more control over your shots. And in some cases, like certain Canon models, the camera will not fire if the photo will end up being too light or too dark. When you think about it,  that’s a great thing, since there is no point in shooting a picture that no one will ever see. Your camera is telling you “Hey, this shot will not work!”

If you really want to become a better shooter, stay on the PROGRAM setting. If you’re like me and shoot a couple hundred shots a day, you will quickly figure out what settings, and in what conditions your camera will provide you with that great shot. It’s really not that hard. All you have to do is get out there and shoot!
