The Wild, Wild West of Photography

In this past year, I have come to notice that many previously paying photo side jobs in Denver have become one of those jobs where they say they are offering you great experiences! They don’t feel the need to compensate their photographers with cold hard cash, i.e. they’re too cheap to pay for their photographers.

Apparently in Colorado it has become the wild, wild west of photography. Everyone wants your services, but no one wants to pay for it!
Others want to trade for your services but they only will accept cash for their services.

Something is wrong here, folks!

So, let’s dispel a couple of misnomers/fallacies that some folks are spreading out there.

Fallacy #1: “I can take just as good shots as yours with my $100 camera.”

Truth: Looking at professional images from a experienced and well-equipped photographer will always blow away the consumer grade cameras.
Does your camera take a 4 by 6 FOOT image with crystal clear quality? My Canon camera is the same camera is being used to shoot production commercials and films. (Parts of the movie “The Matrix” were created with a series of Canon cameras linked together.)

Then again maybe their business is not that important and a cheap $100 camera with pixalated images and low clarity is all that is really needed. They paid nothing for the images, so they essentially got nothing.

Fallacy #2: You don’t really need that much experience to shoot a great shot.

Truth: Ok, granted a newbie photographer might create an awesome image about 1 in 1,000 shots. But a professional photographer will give you hundreds of great shots to choose from and use.

Fallacy #3:” I don’t see the need in spending the money for great images.”

Truth: In a world where the internet, TV and movies blast the consumers right and left, great images are required to grab, captivate, and bring in the customer. Great images will imprint in the customer’s mind and create direct memory links to the products that you are selling.

Since the explosion of the internet, great images are even more vital because consumers are bombarded with advertisements hundreds, sometimes thousands of times a day. A great image will always leave a longer lasting impression than a poorly made camera-phone shot.

In the end, they truly get what they pay for. Nothing. I’ve noticed that many of these businesses have closed their doors. For me, I am happy to be anywhere where life is as vivid as the images I shoot. It’s my priority to shoot the quality images necessary in today’s world. Since I am centrally located in the US, I can be anywhere in a couple of hours to shoot the needs of my clients.
